The Virginia Department of Health, Division of Vital Records (Virginia Vital Records) issues certified copies of Virginia birth certificates, Virginia death certificates, Virginia marriage records and Virginia divorce records, for events which occurred within the State of Virginia. You may order copies of Virginia vital records through VitalChek on an expedited basis.

VIRGINIA BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Virginia Vital Records issues certified copies of Virginia birth certificates, which are typically acceptable for passport, social security, employment, personal identification and other legal purposes.
Who Can Order?
You may order copies of Virginia birth certificates for yourself, your child (as long as you are named on the certificate), your current spouse, a parent, a sibling, or grandchild (if you are the paternal grandparent, the father's name must be listed on the certificate). Your name must also be listed on the credit card or check being used for payment. If you are not one of the persons listed, you must fax proof of entitlement, along with a government issued photo ID, to 800.244.2515.
Note: Virginia birth certificates are public record 100 years after the date of event.
Where Can The Document Be Shipped?
Virginia Vital Records will only ship copies of Virginia birth certificates to the entitled applicant's verified credit card billing address. Please note that express couriers will not ship to a P.O. Box.
VIRGINIA DEATH CERTIFICATES
Virginia Vital Records issues certified copies of Virginia death certificates that can typically be used to obtain death benefits, to claim insurance proceeds and for other legal purposes.
Who Can Order?
Virginia death certificates are only issued to the decedent's current spouse, parent, adult child, or adult sibling. If you are not one of the persons listed, you must fax proof of entitlement, along with a government issued photo ID, to 800.244.2515.
Note: Virginia death certificates are public record 50 years after the date of event.
