D.C. Vital Records issues only certified copies of D.C. birth certificates, which are typically acceptable for passport, social security, employment, personal identification and other legal purposes.

Who Can Order?
You may order copies of D.C. birth certificates for yourself, your child, your mother or father, or an adult sibling. To order a spouse's birth certificate, you must have a notarized statement authorizing the spouse to obtain a copy of his/her record. Legal guardians and legal representatives must submit proof of entitlement. Entitlement documentation should be faxed to 202.783.0136, upon completion of your online order.

A certified birth certificate that can typically be used for travel, passport, proof of citizenship, social security, driver's license, school registration, personal identification and other legal purposes. Birth Certificates are available for events that occurred within the District of Columbia from August 1, 1874 to present.
